Assignment 5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

Article 1: Gov. DeSantis goes bold on climate change. Even Rick Scott says it’s real. Now what? (Sun Sentinel)
-       The story: The topic of climate change has become a political one in recent news. Many argue that our country needs to take more action, and others arguing that it is a fluke. This article states that Florida Governor, Rob DeSantis (R), has changed his attitude toward climate change and is making an effort to combat the problems that Florida will face, both now and in the future. DeSantis is pushing for a new position called ‘Chief Resilience Officer,’ (CRO) the person in this position will have the responsibility to prepare Florida for the environmental burden that is to come. The article also offers some opinions on how this new CRO can be affective.
-       The problem: The problem in the story goes further than climate change. The problem is more focused on the role of politics in climate change, and passing legislation that will be effective in fixing the issues of climate change. It is the job of our government to acknowledge what is happening and to have a strategy to combat these issues.
-       Who has the problem: I think that everyone is going to have to battle the problem of climate change. More specifically, our politician have the problem of passing legislature that will be effective in fixing the issue of climate change.

Article 2: Driver who struck, killed 3 soccer teens headed for Weston smelled of alcohol, sources tell newspaper (Sun Sentinel)
-       The story: Three teens, ages 13, 15, and 17, were killed by a driver early Saturday morning. The women driving the car smelt of alcohol, police have tested her blood to see her BAC level.
-       The problem: Drunk driving. It is easy to pass laws that prohibit drunk driving, but there is no physical barrier to stop people from getting behind the wheel and putting themselves and others at risk.
-       Who has the problem: Anyone who drinks can have this problem. Even underage teens are subject to getting behind the wheel drunk. However, drunk drivers effect everyone around them.

Article 3: Third measles case reported in Florida (Orlando Sentinel)
-       The story: News of the measles has not been uncommon in recent news. The third case this year in Florida has been reported in Pasco county, previous cases were reported in Broward and Pinellas. Last year there were 15 reported cases, compared to previous years this number is well above the usual. The U.S is facing the largest measles outbreak in 25 years.
-       The problem: Measles have made a come-back. Some parents are adopting a anti-vaccination, some think that vaccinations are linked to autism in children, whether or not this is true I cannot attest. Because parents are refusing to vaccinate their children, there has become a higher risk of measles.
-       Who has the problem: It is the job of nurses and doctors to help cure the measles and stop the outbreak. Mothers of children who are vaccinated are worried that their children can risk getting measles by exposure to children who have contracted measles.

Article 4: Rise in depressed seniors (Orlando Sentinel)

The article discussed some of the weaknesses in senior healthcare in Florida. For example, a third of senior are physically inactive, there is a low percent of people volunteering in senior healthcare homes, and high rates of the use of ICUs. The article reports that 16% of 65-and-older adults are depressed, a sharp increase from previous years.
-       The problem: Senior citizens in Florida are facing high rates of depression. Care takers have not found the reason for the high levels of depression in senior citizens. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and this issue of depression must be treated with seriousness.
-       Who has the problem: Senior citizens in Florida.

Article 5: Hot, dry conditions could bring wildfires to Brevard; no rain expected all week (Florida Today)

-       The problem: Drought is striking the county and wildfires are sure to come. This creates a problem for many reasons. The wildfires in California are an example of how dangerous the situation can be. People lose their homes and can even lose their lives.
-       Who has the problem: The citizens of Brevard county, the county fire departments, and the Florida forest service.

  1. Your articles were very interesting to read about, I liked how you covered a variety of topics that affect a very specific group of people (e.g the senior citizens in FL) to a broader group (e.g citizens of Brevard county) to the broadest group (e.g everyone being affected by climate change). You do bring up a good point about drunk driving, how there is no physical barrier yet that stops drunk people from getting behind the wheel. This would be a great opportunity to explore that could save the lives of many. The issues of climate change and drunk driving are issues I feel very strongly about and I am glad you chose to cover these because more people should be bringing awareness to these important topics.

  2. Rebecca,

Overall, you did a very good job at thoroughly covering all the tasks required of you in the assignment. I like how you formatted your post in that you bolded the words that notified the reader of what you were going to talk about. It was very easy to follow along. I also wrote about the potential for wildfires this week in the area; therefore, I agree with the fact that unusually high temperatures and a lack of rain are reasons to worry for potential wildfires. The one thing I would change is that I would put a bullet point in front of the links that you attached. In this case, the formatting would be consistent throughout your post.

  3. Hey Rebecca, great job on the assignment. I enjoyed reading your stories and I can relate to the article you covered on the measles. I read a lot online about the anti vaccination parents and I cant believe they think its healthier to not vaccinate their children instead of vaccinating them. They not only affect their children but they effect others around them as they are more susceptible to getting diseases. I also believe that drunk driving is a HUGE problem in the United States that needs to be fixed. I believe there should be a system to ensure that it is difficult to drive under the influence. Maybe after a certain amount of drinks on a tab you must wait a certain amount of time before being allowed to drive home and leave the restaurant alone.

  4. Rebecca,
You did a great job on your post and the stories you chose are really interesting. These are all real problems in our society. The article you highlighted talking about drunk driving really highlights a huge issue in Florida. I saw a poster the other day that was a map of Florida with all of the drunk driving accidents in the state of Florida in the past year. It is scary to think how frequent people drive intoxicated. I think that there are many opportunities present with the issues you brought up.
